Do Your Employees Actually Use the Action-Cards®?
Yes, they do. A lot. And even after years of daily use, they’re still going strong.
Every company hopes its learning tools don’t end up gathering dust on a shelf. Sooner or later, someone asks, "Do people actually use the Action-Cards®?”
As the NLO team in Denmark has proven, the answer is a definite yes. For the past six years, their Action-Cards® have been used, tested, and relied upon by people working in one of the toughest environments possible: the coast.
A Tool That Became a Habit
When NLO introduced Action-Cards® in 2018 to its employees, the idea was simple. The cards would help lifeguards and coastal rescue teams follow procedures quickly and confidently, even when conditions were intense.
Initially, they weren’t kept in drawers or training rooms. They were in lifeguard huts, on beaches, and on rescue boats. Every day, people handled them with sunscreen on their fingers, saltwater in the air, and limited time to think twice.
Over time, the cards became more than just reference tools; they became part of the routine. Whether it was a safety drill or a real emergency, the team reached for them without hesitation.
After six years of use, we joined NLO for their first maintenance and update session. Considering the constant wind, moisture, and heat exposure, we expected to find plenty of wear and tear.
Out of 560 cards, only 9 had to be replaced. Out of 120 metal rings, just 15 showed corrosion and were changed. The rest were still perfectly usable. The print was clear, the structure intact, and the cards still functioned as a reliable on-the-job guide.
Evidence of Real Work
Each card carried its own story. Some had faded corners, a scratch from being dropped near a rescue board, or small stains from sunscreen or sea spray. These weren’t flaws; they were signs of experience.
The cards had clearly seen action, handled by people making quick, informed decisions in unpredictable conditions. It’s one thing to say a product is built to last, but it’s another to see it surviving years of constant use while still doing exactly what it was made to do.
Why They Last
Of course, the cards are designed for this kind of use. They’re printed on coated, weather-resistant stock and connected with sturdy metal rings that can withstand movement and moisture. But design alone doesn’t explain everything.
Their continued presence in daily work comes down to practicality. The team at NLO doesn’t use them because they have to; they use them because they make sense. They simplify decision-making and provide quick reminders when it matters most.
That kind of usability is what gives a tool real value. It’s not about keeping it pristine; it’s about keeping it relevant.
Learning That Lives On
The maintenance visit wasn’t just about replacing a few pieces. It was also an opportunity to refresh knowledge, update cards, and add new ones that reflect lessons learned in the field. The updated sets are already back with NLO, ready for another busy season by the sea.
So, the next time someone wonders if employees actually use their Action-Cards®, the answer is right here.
Yes, they use them every single day. And even after six years of salt, sand, and sunshine, those same cards are still ready for action.
