We got Action-cards® and started preparing with them
About 14 days after I started as a manager of a restaurant in Copenhagen, we received Action-cards®, which the owner bought for us.
I’d been thinking for a long time about signing up for a first-aid course, because it had been a few years since I last took one.
When the cards arrived, I read them all and immediately noted that they were useful for remembering what to do in different, difficult situations.
The Moment of Crisis!
As if on cue, a group of younger men came into the restaurant a few weeks later. They were in a great mood, and the place was buzzing.
Suddenly, one of the men stood up from the table, grabbed at his throat, and staggered towards the kitchen where I was standing.
He said nothing and looked panicked.
It was clear he was choking.
Fortunately, I remembered that I had read the Action-card® for “blocked airways” and because of that I knew exactly what to do so I immediately started helping him.
First I hit him on the back, but it didn’t help.


Then I tried to perform the Heimlich maneuver.
He was a big guy, and I couldn’t get a good grip on his stomach.
The food stuck in his throat wouldn’t come loose.
Luckily, one of his friends joined me in responding and I could guide him on what to do based on my knowledge from the Action-cards®, and he was strong enough to get a good grip.
I directed him on how to perform the Heimlich maneuver, and he followed my instructions.
Suddenly, a big lump of meat came flying out of his mouth. He could breathe again!
